Leadership

Tweed Thornton, founder of Four Star Initiatives

I work at the intersection of nonprofit leadership, communications, and public engagement.

Through Four Star Initiatives, I partner with nonprofit leaders and boards navigating growth and change. I help ensure that strategy, communications, and public engagement move together so organizations can operate with clarity and confidence.

Before founding Four Star Initiatives, I served for more than eight years as Executive Director of the City Club of Chicago. During that time, I tripled membership, expanded programming, and elevated the organization’s speaker profile from primarily regional voices to nationally recognized leaders. This growth included hosting prominent public forums, highlighted by a joint appearance by U.S. Senators Richard Durbin and John McCain.

Today, I serve as Executive Director of the Publicity Club of Chicago, where I oversee organizational strategy, programming direction, board partnership, and external representation. I also serve as President of the Board of Directors for the Association of Consultants to Nonprofits. In that role I guide governance, strengthen professional standards, and advocate for the nonprofit consulting sector.

I am a member of Impact House, a collaborative community of social impact leaders in Chicago. I also serve on the Advisory Committee for the DuPage Foundation’s Arts DuPage initiative where I support regional arts and cultural strategy.

Across advisory work and institutional leadership, my focus remains consistent: aligning strategy, story, and stage to strengthen nonprofit organizations and the communities they serve.
